Julia Garner in The Assistant (Bleecker Street) A new film gingerly takes on the notorious industry tycoon. A t last, theres a movie about Harvey Weinstein. True, nobody important is involved, none of the major studios are distributing it, the budget is approximately 1. 78, and major issues go unaddressed. Baby steps! At the rate the movie industry is racing slowly to cover sexual depredations of famous Democrats, we might get a frankly honest movie about John F. Kennedy in, say, 65 years. The Weinstein movie, which is debuting at the Sundance Film Festival and hits theaters on January 31, is called The Assistant, yet for a movie about sexual misconduct, it looks an awful lot like a movie about making coffee, consulting vacuum-cleaner instruction manuals, and unjamming office copiers. The titular figure, played by Julia Garner, is an office newbie who works for an executive whose face we never see, and whose name is never given, but who unmistakably evokes Weinstein, right down to the Tribeca headquarters, the foreign wife, and the locations of his houses (Connecticut, Greenwich Village, Amagansett. The assistant lives in a blank, haunted daze, beset by CTSD (current traumatic stress disorder) as she awaits the next tantrum and notices disturbing signs of iniquity. She finds an earring on the carpet, near the couch, and suspects that a fresh new office girl from Idaho, who is being lodged at a pricey hotel, is the bosss latest concubine. At its most disgusting, the film finds the assistant donning rubber gloves and scrubbing stains off the casting couch. Dont say you werent warned. That brief scene may earn the film a rep for being an insiders hard-hitting (I almost said juicy) account, but dont be fooled. Three-quarters of the movie consists of the advanced banality of booking hotels, ordering lunch, and waiting in silence for elevator doors to open. Even at 85 minutes, the movie is heavily padded, and as was the case with many previous Sundance films, the casual viewer will wonder whether it might have been wise for the filmmaker (in this case, writer-director Kitty Green) to develop a feature-length story before starting production. As for the rare moments of interspersed gossip, some seems like it was plucked off the assistants chat room and has little to do with Weinstein. In one sharply etched moment, the boss berates the assistant on the phone, then sends an apologetic email: “Youre very good. If Im tough on you its because I know you can be great. ” Clever, and revealing: This must be how Hollywoods legendarily nasty tycoons simultaneously justify their rotten behavior and make their underlings feel like theres a point to it all, so they shouldnt quit just yet. Green need not state that “getting yelled at” is not actually a skill, much less a spur to greatness. Whether Hollywood people understand this, I couldnt say. Even at its most damning, though, The Assistant is so mild that Weinsteins own lawyers could hardly object if the jury at his trial were to see this film. Weinstein has always contended that he had sex with lots of women but it was always consensual; nothing in the film goes against that. In a strangely oblivious interlude, the assistant steels herself and walks over to the H. R. department to blow the whistle. A compliance officer (Matthew Macfadyen) who at first seems receptive and friendly turns sinister and disagreeable while shes in his office stumbling through what she knows, and a strong couple of minutes from Macfadyen provide the only real acting in the movie. But what is he supposed to do? The assistant has no evidence of any illegal activity. The compliance officer can hardly call in a SWAT team and destroy the company because the head honcho is having extramarital affairs. Society in general has long since passed the point where anyone really considered poking his nose into somebody elses extramarital affairs, unless other wrongdoing was involved, but in Hollywood the casting couch has been standard equipment since Day 1. The assistant has no case. The compliance officer is absolutely right to tell her so. That scene is the crux of the movies argument, which is a thin one: that young women were helplessly caught up in an evil system in which other young women were exploited by Harvey Weinstein. But this character is the wrong lens through which to view the Weinstein story; you might as well ask a guy who sells hot dogs at Minute Maid Park what he thinks of the Houston Astros scandal. The Weinstein scandal reaches to the highest levels of the entertainment industry and government. People far more important than the office copy-girl knew far more about what was happening with Weinstein, and they all agreed to participate in a conspiracy of silence for the tawdriest of reasons: Weinstein knew how to win Oscars, which all of them desperately wanted. He won one for Meryl Streep. He won one for Penelope Cruz. He won one for Kate Winslet. He won one for Gwyneth Paltrow. None of them had the slightest desire to speak out against him, and none did. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were happy to take Weinsteins money too, blinders clamped on. All of this is a lot more interesting than an assistant finding an earring on the carpet, but dont hold your breath for a movie that tells the whole story.

Well this is great but where's Ozark young lady
Its like a civil action meets erin brockovich but without humor. That over-the-top music puts me off straight away. 0:26 I hope my boss can say this to me. Kitty Greens film about a day in the life of a young woman at a Weinstein-like company is a spare, searing story of abuse and complicity. Photo: Courtesy of Sundance Institute Whenever Jane (Julia Garner) has to write an apology email to her boss, the other assistants in the room reflexively come up behind her to suggest wording. “Its not my place to question your decisions, ” they murmur over her shoulder as she types, “Im grateful for the continued opportunity. ” Its a ritual of abasement to which theyve obviously become accustomed. Jane, on the other hand, is still learning the ropes at the New York film company at which The Assistant is set. She occupies the lowest rung on the ladder, which is why she has to arrive first, in the pre-dawn darkness, to open up the office. Its also why she puts on gloves and cleans up whatever new stains have been deposited on the couch in the chairmans office. The expression on her face when she does this is the same as the one thats there when she washes the dishes left in the kitchen by co-workers who dont even seem to see her. Its the tight, pallid look of someone trying to get through things without thinking too hard about what shes doing. That the man Jane is working under in The Assistant is a stand-in for Harvey Weinstein is understood. Hes never named and he never appears onscreen, an approach that echoes how filmmaker and former Weinstein assistant Leslye Headland wrote about her old workplace in her 2008 play Assistance. The Assistant shares an understanding that the man himself is less psychologically interesting than the people around him, and how theyve learned to tolerate, accommodate, rationalize away, or internalize his behavior. What makes the film such a spare but searingly insightful treatment of the issues at the core of Me Too is the way it refuses to separate its unseen executives sexual predation from the larger structures that enable it. The environment revolves around certain unspoken but understood rules of abuse — namely, that abuse is something that you have to put up with until youre powerful enough to be amused by or dismissive of it when its directed at others. And here its women, especially women that the chairman finds desirable, who receive a disproportionate amount of it. The Assistant is the first scripted feature from writer-director Kitty Green. For her last film, the 2017 documentary Casting JonBenet, Green put out a call to Colorado-based actors to try out for the major roles in the unsolved 1996 child murder, and, while they were there, to offer up their own theories and recollections. It was an excavation of our true-crime obsession that was illuminating, chilly, and occasionally cruel in its pitiless use of its eager-to-please interviewees. That same sense of distance is there in The Assistant, but it serves the new film far better. The Assistant observes its main character, a recent college grad who has theoretically landed her dream job, with a detached interest, taking in her struggles and her complicity while offering her neither sympathy nor castigation. The camera pays closer attention to Jane than the people in her professional life, most of whom treat her as ranking somewhere above office furniture but not quite at the level of actual human. In one sequence, she shares an elevator with Patrick Wilson, apparently playing himself, and the way they awkwardly attempt to exit at the same time suggests he hadnt even realized shed been standing next to him. The Assistant takes place over the course of a grueling but typical day for Jane — an airless trudge through phone calls and photocopies that deviates from the norm only when she decides to stop by human resources to file a complaint. She does this not on her own behalf, but because of the new assistant the chairman has decided to add to the pool — a painfully young and pretty former waitress from Idaho (Kristine Froseth) that he met at a conference and offered a job to. Its hard to tell whether Jane is moved to action because she sees herself in the new girl, whom she nevertheless escorts to her boss hotel of choice. It seems just as possible that she acts because she doesnt see any of herself in the new girl; the hiring lays bare how arbitrary their employment is. Its not work or experience that matters, its the demanded displays of loyalty and subservience — and in that light, fielding calls from your boss angry wife and (maybe) trading sexual favors with him are all regarded as the same thing. The scene in HR that follows, and that involves Matthew Macfadyen, with a smile full of razors, makes the dilemma of Janes position apparent. He suggests shes jealous, that shes overreacting, that shes denying the agency of grown women, and thats she throwing away a prime opportunity for the sake of a whim. And once hes worn her down to a nub, he assures her, “I dont think you have anything to worry about. Youre not his type. ” Theres nothing about Jane, whom Garner plays with a rabbity air of uncertainty, that suggests shell ever speak up again. Shes a girl from a nice home who went to a good school, and shes doing what shes been told she ought to in order to rise through the ranks. When her boss gives her the verbal equivalent of a pat on the head after one of his outbursts — “Im tough on you because Im gonna make you great” — its easy to imagine Jane as one of the few older women executives in the office, who roll their eyes at everything she struggles to bear witness to, having long ago accepted that its all part of the business.
